A MOVEMENT AND A PARTY
Herschel Hardin Leadership Campaign Policy Circular 15 • May 25, 1995 |

Our party has to be a movement as well as a party, not because, allegedly, a movement is idealistic and a party is crass, but because unless we succeed as a movement we cannot succeed as a party. For a party fighting against a dominant ideology, and mass media which reflect it, it is not enough to make short term political calculations. Movement and party should be, for us, one and the same thing. The essence of a movement, of course, is education. In these days of mass media, education means boldness, openness, welcoming controversy rather than avoiding it on our issues, taking the public into our confidence, being confident and relaxed ourselves. It also means a broad range of knowledge, reaching people in both traditional and new ways that do not depend on the mass media, and the long range commitment that goes with educational work.
For us, there are no short cuts. |
